One CRISPR Infusion, Effects Still Seen at One Year: Early Lipid-Lowering Data

General Medical Discoveries · Human study — phase 1a

Researchers followed participants in an early phase 1a study who received a one-time infusion of CTX310, an experimental CRISPR-Cas9 therapy designed to edit the ANGPTL3 gene in the liver. At one year, reductions in ANGPTL3 protein and atherogenic lipids were still present, and the published report described no treatment-related dose-limiting toxic effects. This is an interesting signal for people with difficult-to-treat lipid disorders, but the research remains at a very early stage. An orthopaedic surgeon following developments in gene editing should distinguish a biomarker change from a patient benefit: it is not yet known whether permanent gene editing will reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke, or what its safety profile will look like over many years. CTX310 remains an experimental treatment.
