Arthroscopy and Reconstructive Surgery

Arthroscopy can treat selected joint problems through small incisions, but it is not one universal operation. The procedure depends on the diagnosis, injured structure, age, activity level and the condition of cartilage, menisci, ligaments and tendons.
If the problem is related to a sports injury, instability or return to activity, see also Sports Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Detailed information about specific conditions and injuries is available in the related guides.
Knee
Assessment may concern ACL injury, meniscal tears, instability and other conditions in which arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery is considered. Not every meniscal tear requires arthroscopy; the injury pattern, mechanical symptoms, stability and activity level matter.
Shoulder
Operative treatment may be considered for selected rotator cuff tears, recurrent instability and other structural shoulder problems. Imaging findings are interpreted together with symptoms and examination; an abnormal MRI alone is not an indication for surgery.
Hip and ankle
Selected patients with femoroacetabular impingement, labral pathology or osteochondral lesions may require surgical assessment. The decision depends on symptoms, examination, imaging and the characteristics of the lesion.
From diagnosis to return to activity
The first question is whether surgery is actually needed and what problem it is intended to solve. The procedure, rehabilitation and return to activity are then selected for the specific diagnosis. Rehabilitation depends on the repaired or reconstructed tissue, not simply on the word “arthroscopy”.
