Loberamisal After Ischaemic Stroke: Promising Phase 3 Results

General Medical Discoveries · Large randomised phase 3 trial

The LAIS trial tested intravenous loberamisal, a drug being studied to protect nerve cells and support recovery after an ischaemic stroke. Among 997 patients treated within 48 hours of symptom onset, full or near-full functional recovery at 90 days was achieved by 69.7% of patients receiving loberamisal and 56.3% receiving placebo. For an orthopaedic surgeon following research on recovery of function, the result is encouraging, but the trial was conducted entirely in China, excluded patients treated with endovascular thrombectomy, and several secondary outcomes did not differ between groups. The findings therefore need confirmation in other populations and care settings before broader clinical use can be established.
